FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - The U.S. 30 corridor has had an increase in crashes, including what happened Wednesday morning.

U.S.30 is a major connector from Fort Wayne to Chicago. The U.S. highway has had many deadly crashes over the decade. Those crashes stemmed from side roads coming onto the highway, along with stoplights.

Sergeant Brian Walker with the Indiana State Police says, these problems need to be fixed and he says it begins with the driver.

“The biggest thing we need is drivers that are paying attention, the driver being more patient, not trying to beat the traffic across those intersections from the side roades, and just better control of the vehicle. Slowing your speeds down. Solves a lot of those problems.”

Hunter Petroviak with across says two different projects are in the works to address safety concerns on the highway. One of those projects will include where the deadly crash happened Wednesday. It’s called “The Planning Environmental Linkage.”

“It’s going to be a major study of the whole stretch of US30 here in Indiana, intersection by intersection and what’s best and how to address those safety concerns across that entire stretch of road.”

Overall, this means we won’t see any significant changes to U.S.30 for a while. the

The last public meeting was held back in early February. Petroviak says the public should expect another meeting in the near future. For now, you can keep up with the latest information through INDOT’s Facebook page.
