FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - The Allen County Public Library is considering making some big changes to libraries located on the city’s southeast side.

The Shawnee Branch is under consideration to be shut down according to their recent “Master Plan”. After months of site visits, staff and patron surveys, focus groups, and community conversations, they released this preliminary draft.

The building dates back to 1973, with a renovation that happened in 2003. According to the report on the Shawnee Branch, overall the building’s condition is in poor standing, the site is not fit for a future expansion, and library officials say a possible renovation does not carry a 10-year service demand.

Pamela Martain-Diaz, a former manager at the Shawnee Branch says when she heard the news of the possible tear-down, she didn’t think about herself, but the community the library serves.

Library officials say they are making this process transparent to the community. This plan is not set in stone, but instead a jumping-off point for continued dialogue with the community at large.

The next public meeting is set for Wednesday Match 9 at 6 p.m. This will be another opportunity for the communities voice to be heard.
