FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - An organization in The Fort is joining the fight against aids by providing resources, free testing and more.

December 1, 2021 marks World Aids Day and an organization in The Fort is helping combat the problem. Positive Resource Connection in Fort Wayne of the Northeast Indiana is to prevent new cases of HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis, and STDs and advance a compassionate and stigma-free community response. Jeff Markley, the executive director of the organization, says the organization is dear to his heart.

Just to give some perspective, 37 million people worldwide are living with the disease. Markley says must be fought locally, which is what the Positive Resource Connection is for.

To do that, everyday the organization offers free HIV testing. The organization also offers a service called PREP, which is designed to prevent infection when other risk factors are present. Folks with the organization also work with patients to help lower their viral load so they can’t transmit the disease.

The Biden Administration just unveiled a new national HIV aid strategy, which points to racism as a public health threat. The plan prioritizes Black men and women, young people, Native Americans and Latinos. The President says the advances that have been made are a tribute to the hard work of so many people. The plan’s goal is to end the the HIV epidemic by 2030.
