Allen County wires $3.5 million to Electric Works developers

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) – The Allen County Board of Commissioners announced they’ve wired a lump sum of cash to the developers of the Electric Works project.

The county’s $3.5 million investment is in addition to the $1 million provided in the fall of 2018 for remediation work on the old General Electric campus.

“This project will have a sizable economic impact during construction and will help lead us to our fifth straight year of $1 billion in construction projects in Allen County,” the commissioners said in a joint statement. “We are glad to see business retention and expansion taking place, in addition to the new companies and jobs coming to our community.”

Developers plan to convert the long-idled General Electric campus on the outskirts of downtown Fort Wayne into a multi-purpose facility. Do it Best Corp. has agreed to serve as the anchor tenant and move its headquarters to the location from its current home in New Haven.

The first phase of Electric Works includes more than 700,000 square feet of space and offers office, innovation, education, healthcare, retail, entertainment, and community uses.

Developers hope to break ground on the project next year.
